Publicize: add Mastodon #7790
Comments
As a starting point, https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon-bridge is a pretty good example of how to do OAuth in a federated system. https://github.com/tootsuite/omniauth-mastodon is a ruby omniauth strategy for mastodon. |
Requested in #904160-zen. |

No further action is needed. But it's worth checking if this ticket has clear reproduction steps and it is still reproducible. Feel free to close this issue if you think it's not valid anymore — if you do, please add a brief explanation. |
I have forked JetPack and created a Publicize Mastodon feature branch to begin working on this. |
https://github.com/timnolte/jetpack/tree/feature/publicize-mastodon for easy reference |
Since the actual API calls are made via the .com codebase (thanks to @enejb for pointing it out) there is additional work that will need to be done. Also this change is required as well. |

This issue needs WordPress.com support/work. |

Since this requires WordPress.com work this issue might as well be closed. If I get around to it I might invest time in creating a .org pluging that simply hooks into the Publicize feature of JetPack and but does the Mastodon posting all on it's own, essentially an extension to JetPack Publicize. |

With all the issues with Twitter now, perhaps this can be revisited? |

I'd certainly still like to have this. I'm currently using a plugin that works but is kind of messy, it'd really be nice to have this controlled in the same place as other corporate social media connections. |
Given that social media sharing in JetPack is locked up in proprietary VIP code there isn't anything the OSS community can do to make this happen. The JetPack Team is going to have to take it upon themselves to make this happen. This is why I never made any progress with this effort. I'm using a Mastodon Sharing plugin. Another alternative is to setup your WordPress site with ActivityPub and allow people on Mastodon to directly follow your WordPress site. |
I remember looking into AP plugins for Wordpress around the time I made this request and finding them to be a mess back then - do you know if that’s improved in the intervening years?

I would like it too please! |
Another user request here: 26552009-hc |
Please provide Maston support or at least, give us the options to manually add it. Thanks so much! |
To echo a lot of the more recent comments, and using Matt Mullenweg's own comments about Tumblr and ActivityPub: adding Mastodon sharing buttons out of the box would offer incentives for the use and discovery of that open platform. We need a share button for Mastodon yesterday... Or more like 4 years ago. |
Adding my own voice to this, as I'd love to see this added as well. A lot of people have moved to Mastodon recently, and it would be great to help promote this further on a site-by-site basis (as this is an opt-in option on Jetpack). |
Another request made in 5835212-zen (WPCOM) |

Also adding my own request 🙏 |
Another request in this tweet: https://twitter.com/bobmueller/status/1612990747711778819 |
This is certainly needed more than ever. Mastodon has become very popular in recent months and with the behaviour over at Twitter, we need this ability for our visitors please. |
Please add Mastodon post support. |
In 5964646-zd-woothemes user requested Mastodon to be added to the Sharing Buttons. I see it's being worked on here: |
Nice to see progress but what I'm looking for is a Jetpack Publicize feature to post automatically to Mastodon when we publish a post on WordPress. Still holding out hope :) |
I created https://mastofeed.org (which automatically sends RSS/Atom items to any Mastodon instance) and could help with this issue. |
This is fine, but doesn't address the issue of adding Mastodon to Jetpack Social, keeping all social media connections in one place. I'm currently using IFTTT to do the same. Connecting to Mastodon isn't the issue, doing it with Jetpack is. |
For anyone following along, we have a working prototype that will be opened up for internal (Automattic) testing in the next few days. Updating this to the Jetpack 12.2 milestone as we're aiming to have this live in the next Jetpack release. |
Please accept my gratitude and extend it to the rest of the team! I really appreciate the work you all have done to get this feature implemented. All the best! |
Closing this issue now, since you can now automatically publish your new posts to Mastodon, starting with Jetpack 12.2. It was released earlier today. |
Mastodon is the new hotness in social media: distributed Twitter, but with far fewer Nazis and longer tweets.
There are a couple of WP plugins that claim to be able to automatically post to Mastodon about new blog entries, but neither of them worked for me. How about adding it to the "publicize" section Jetpack adds to the "publish" section of the new post screen?
Mastodon's Github page has API docs; there are also a few API wrappers out there.
